Magic Patterns helps product teams turn ideas into interactive prototypes. In a conversation with Dalton Caldwell, co-founder and CEO Alex Danilowicz explains how the team responded when its model provider became a competitor.
When Claude Design appeared, Alex’s first question wasn’t how much attention the announcement received. It was whether customers would use it. Once customers started mentioning it, he got on calls to understand their workflows—including prospects who had chosen the competing product.
That distinction matters. A launch tells you what a competitor wants to build. A customer conversation tells you what people need and where your product falls short. Alex describes using those conversations to push Magic Patterns further rather than abandoning its focus.
The team’s approach to feedback extends beyond the founders. Alex says everyone does customer support, including engineers, and an internal AI agent summarizes customer meetings for the product team. They also distinguish feedback from product teams designing software from feedback from hobbyists building a website. Both can be useful, but they describe different needs.
MagicOS brings that focus into a shared canvas. Teams can gather product requirements, inspiration images, and design variations in one place, then compare directions without losing the context behind them. Alex describes using the product to design its own agent-loading indicators: exploring visual references, loading states, and error states side by side rather than squeezing everything into one prototype.
Alex also sees an advantage in supporting multiple models. Customers can keep their design work in Magic Patterns without committing the entire workflow to one model provider.
His advice to founders is not to ignore competition. It is to turn it into specific work: talk to customers who are considering the alternative, understand what they need, and build a better product for them. The goal isn’t just to survive a large company entering the market. It’s to give customers a reason to choose you.
